Periodontology — gum treatment

Bleeding when you brush is the first sign of inflammation, and at that stage everything is still reversible. Later the inflammation moves into the tissue holding the tooth, and bone that has been lost cannot be brought back — the process can only be stopped.

How the process develops

Between “it bleeds when I brush” and “the tooth has become loose” lie several years of doing nothing.

What people come in with

  • Blood on the brush or in the basin after brushing.
  • Swelling and redness along the gum edge.
  • Bad breath that mouthwash does not fix.
  • Exposed necks of teeth and increased sensitivity.
  • Loose teeth or new gaps appearing between them.

What increases the risk of gum disease

  • Smoking — it can mask the bleeding while the disease keeps progressing.
  • Diabetes — especially when blood sugar is poorly controlled, it raises the risk of gum inflammation.
  • Family history and features of the bite.
  • Pregnancy — hormonal changes can make the gums more prone to inflammation.
  • Insufficient hygiene and no regular cleaning between the teeth.

How treatment goes

STEP 1Diagnostics

The dentist draws up a periodontal chart — measuring pocket depth at every tooth — and assesses the bone level on the X-ray.

STEP 2Removing deposits

Professional cleaning to the extended protocol: tartar is removed above and below the gumline.

STEP 3Curettage

Deep cleaning of the periodontal pockets, removing plaque and deposits. Depending on the depth this is done by the closed or the open method.

STEP 4Maintenance

After the main treatment it is important to keep an eye on the gums and the periodontal pockets. Your dentist decides how often you should come for check-ups.

Frequently asked questions

Is bleeding from the gums normal?
No. Healthy gums do not bleed. Most often it is gingivitis caused by plaque at the edge of the tooth, and at that stage cleaning and the right brushing technique solve it.
Can periodontitis be cured completely?
Bone that has been destroyed does not grow back, so the process is stopped and kept stable. The earlier treatment starts, the more can be saved.
What should I do if my gums bleed when I brush?
Do not stop cleaning that spot — without brushing, plaque builds up faster and the inflammation grows. Brush gently, with a soft brush, and book an appointment.
Do gum toothpastes and mouthwashes help?
They ease the symptom but do not remove the cause — tartar. While that is still there, the inflammation comes back.
