Hygiene and professional cleaning

The most underrated procedure in dentistry: people put it off because nothing hurts. Yet it is what most often decides whether you will be treating your gums a few years from now.

Why it matters

Hardened plaque cannot be removed by anything you use at home — not a brush, not floss, not a water flosser.

What cleaning does

  • Removes tartar above and below the gumline — the cause of inflammation.
  • Takes off staining from coffee, tea, wine and tobacco.
  • Stops bleeding gums at an early stage.
  • Opens the teeth up for examination: decay cannot be seen under tartar.
  • Extends the life of crowns, implants and braces.

Who needs it more often

  • Anyone with bleeding gums or diagnosed periodontitis.
  • Smokers — plaque and staining build up faster.
  • People with diabetes: gum inflammation and blood sugar affect each other.
  • Anyone wearing braces or with implants and bridges.
  • During pregnancy — the gums react more strongly to the same plaque.

How the appointment goes

STEP 1Examination

The dentist or hygienist assesses the state of the gums and the amount of deposits — that determines the cleaning protocol.

STEP 2Removing tartar

With ultrasound, above and below the gumline. It is the tartar below the gum that keeps the inflammation going.

STEP 3AirFlow and polishing

Air-abrasive treatment removes staining, and polishing leaves the surface smooth — new plaque settles on it more slowly.

STEP 4Advice

We go through your brushing technique and choose products for your situation. We agree when to come next.

Frequently asked questions

How often is cleaning needed?
The common advice is every six months, but that is an average. Your real interval depends on how quickly tartar builds up: some people need it every three months, for others every nine is enough.
Does it hurt?
Usually not. With inflamed gums or exposed necks of teeth it can be sensitive — in that case we use anaesthetic.
Why are my teeth sensitive to cold after cleaning?
The tartar had been covering the necks of the teeth for a while, and once it is removed they meet cold and heat for the first time. It usually passes within a couple of weeks.
Does cleaning whiten teeth?
It brings back their own colour by removing staining, but it does not change the colour of the tooth tissue itself. Those are two different procedures.
