General dentistry
Conservative dentistry covers everything — from a tiny spot on the enamel to saving the root canals. The tricky thing about decay is that it does not hurt at all until it reaches the nerve. That is why we usually find it at a check-up rather than when someone arrives in acute pain. The rule is simple: the earlier your dentist spots the problem, the easier the treatment. Treating a small cavity costs a fraction of complex root canal work, and it is in a different league altogether from placing an implant where a tooth used to be.
What general dentistry covers
How much work is needed depends on the stage. On the enamel, remineralisation is enough — no drilling; deeper down a filling is needed; and if the nerve is inflamed, the canals have to be treated and the tooth rebuilt.
Decay stage by stage
- A spot on the enamel — treated with remineralisation, without drilling.
- Surface decay — a small filling, one visit.
- Moderate decay — a larger filling, the tooth stays alive.
- Deep decay — a special protective lining material is used. Even so, there remains a risk that the nerve becomes inflamed and the canals need treating.
- Pulpitis — the inflammation has reached the nerve, so saving the tooth means cleaning and filling the root canals and then rebuilding the tooth.
When root canal treatment is needed
- Spontaneous or night-time pain that does not go away.
- A lingering reaction to heat that does not settle once the source is removed.
- Deep decay that has reached the pulp.
- A change in the colour of the tooth — often a sign that the nerve has died.
- Inflammation at the root tip, visible on the X-ray.
- Canals treated poorly in the past — retreatment is needed.
How treatment goes
They show how far the decay has spread. The X-ray reveals hidden decay between teeth and under old fillings, and for root canal work it shows the position, shape and length of the canals.
We start only once the anaesthetic has taken effect. If it “usually doesn't work” on you, say so in advance and we will use a different protocol.
With decay we remove the affected tissue and keep what is healthy. For root canals we work under isolation and clean the canal along its whole length, confirmed by a check X-ray.
We restore the shape of the tooth. After root canal treatment a back tooth needs extra protection — a crown strengthens it and reduces the risk of chipping or fracture.

The price depends on how much of the tooth is damaged and on the number of canals: a small filling and a four-canal molar are fundamentally different amounts of work.

Who treats you
General dentistry is provided by the clinic's dentists, working to shared clinical protocols. Root canal treatment is carried out with optical magnification, including a dental microscope.
