What we look at and when

The type of examination is chosen to answer a specific question — we do not take unnecessary images.

Types of examination

Periapical X-ray — a single tooth: decay, canal, the area around the root tip.
Panoramic X-ray — both jaws in full, the overall picture.
3D imaging — bone volume, the position of canals and developing teeth.
Digital impression — scanning instead of impression putty.
Photo record — capturing the starting point and tracking changes.
Functional assessment of the jaw joint — for clicking and pain when chewing.

When an X-ray is essential

Before root canal treatment and after it — as a check.
Before implant treatment — to assess the volume and density of the bone.
For pain whose cause is not visible on examination.
Before orthodontic treatment — to assess the position of the roots.
For children — to see the developing permanent teeth.
Once a year at the routine check-up — to keep an eye on old fillings.

The dentist examines the teeth, gums and soft tissue and assesses the bite and the state of old restorations.

STEP 3X-ray

We take the type of image that answers the specific question. If you are pregnant, tell us before the X-ray.

STEP 4Treatment plan

We go through the findings, discuss the options and put the plan in writing with prices. The plan is yours to keep.

The first consultation with an examination is given by the clinic's dentists; a specialist consultation by the dentist in the relevant field.

Frequently asked questions

Is an X-ray really necessary?

Without one you cannot see decay between the teeth, the state of the canals or what is happening at the root tip. A dentist may decline to start treatment blind — that is a matter of safety, not formality.

How safe is it?

Digital equipment gives a noticeably lower dose than film. Your dentist must justify every image taken. If you are pregnant or think you may be, tell us before the examination.

Can I bring an X-ray from another clinic?

Yes. Bring the file or the disc with the scan, not just a printout of the report. If the image is recent and of the right type, there is no need to repeat it.

How long is an X-ray valid?

It depends on the purpose. For routine treatment an image up to a year old is usually accepted; before surgery a recent one is more often needed — the state of the bone and tissue may have changed.
